Naturally present in the skin, hyaluronic acid is primarily used in cosmetics to help maintain hydration. It does not exfoliate and does not replace hyaluronic acid injections: a serum or cream works in a completely different context.

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid, also called hyaluronan, belongs to the glycosaminoglycan family. This long molecule is naturally present in several body tissues, including the skin. Its structure allows it to interact with large amounts of water, hence its interest in hydrating skincare.

Despite its name, hyaluronic acid is not an exfoliating acid. It is not used like glycolic acid or lactic acid and its function is not to remove dead cells. In a serum, gel, or cream, its role is primarily related to hydration and the sensory properties of the formula.

It is also important to distinguish between hyaluronic acid naturally present in the skin, that incorporated into a cosmetic, and injectable gels used in aesthetic medicine. Applying a skincare product to the face does not produce the volumizing effect of an injection.

What are the benefits of hyaluronic acid for the skin?

1. It helps maintain hydration

In cosmetics, hyaluronic acid acts as a humectant. It helps retain water in the superficial layer of the skin and in the film formed by the product. This can make the skin feel more comfortable and less rough. This benefit is particularly useful when it feels tight after cleansing, appears dull, or easily shows dehydration lines.

A controlled study of 76 women evaluated creams containing 0.1% hyaluronic acid of different molecular weights over 60 days. The different formulas improved hydration and elasticity measured compared to placebo. Some molecular sizes also improved wrinkle relief measurements. These results are encouraging, but they concern specific formulas: they do not allow attributing the same performance to all products containing hyaluronic acid.

2. It smooths the appearance of dehydration lines

When the superficial layer of the skin lacks water, small lines often appear more prominent. By improving hydration, a hyaluronic acid product can give a smoother and plumper appearance. This is a cosmetic effect on appearance, not a permanent filling of wrinkles.

The term "hyaluronic acid" is often used as a generic name, whereas an INCI list can display several forms. Here's how to recognize them.

Molecular weight influences the ingredient's behavior. Larger chains primarily play a role on the surface and in the moisturizing film, while smaller chains can interact differently with the superficial layers. However, shortcuts like "smaller = always better" are misleading: stability, concentration, vehicle, and other components of the formula also matter.

A so-called "multi-weight" formula combines several sizes or forms of hyaluronic acid to seek complementary effects. This mention should ideally be based on the specifications of the raw materials used, and not solely on marketing vocabulary.

What skin type is hyaluronic acid suitable for?

Hyaluronic acid can be suitable for all skin types, as dry, normal, combination, or oily skin can be dehydrated.

  • Dehydrated skin: This is the most obvious situation. A humectant serum or gel can help restore suppleness and comfort.
  • Dry skin: Hyaluronic acid provides the humectant dimension, but a cream containing emollients and lipids is often still necessary to limit water loss.
  • Oily or combination skin: An aqueous and light texture provides hydration without seeking a rich finish.
  • Mature skin: Improved hydration can make dehydration lines less visible and support a more supple appearance.
  • Sensitive skin: The ingredient is generally well tolerated, but the entire formula must be evaluated, especially fragrance, alcohol, and other active ingredients.

Skin that remains red, painful, very irritated, or chronically flaky is not solely due to a serum choice. In this case, consult a healthcare professional.

How to use hyaluronic acid in your routine?

  1. Cleanse skin without stripping it. Overly aggressive cleansing can worsen tightness.
  2. Apply the thinnest texture. A hyaluronic acid mist, essence, serum, or gel is typically used before a cream.
  3. Add a cream if necessary. For dry skin or in a cold, dry environment, an emollient formula helps to complement the action of humectants.
  4. In the morning, finish with sun protection. Hyaluronic acid does not protect against UVA or UVB rays.

It can be applied to slightly damp skin if the product instructions allow, but this is not a universal requirement: an aqueous cosmetic formula already contains water. The correct amount and frequency depend on the product. For most hydrating serums and creams, morning and/or evening use is possible depending on instructions and tolerance.

  • Sodium PCA and glycerin: these humectants complement a hydration strategy without relying on a single molecule.

What mistakes to avoid?

Choosing based solely on the displayed percentage

A high concentration does not automatically mean a better result. The type of hyaluronic acid, the quality of the formula, the texture, and other hydrating or emollient ingredients are just as important. A well-formulated product at a moderate concentration can be more pleasant and effective than a sticky formula chosen for a spectacular number.

Confusing dry skin and dehydrated skin

Dehydrated skin lacks water; dry skin primarily lacks lipids. Hyaluronic acid addresses the first dimension. If the skin is dry, it benefits from being combined with a cream containing appropriate emollients or occlusive agents.

Expecting an injectable result from a topical product

A cosmetic can improve skin surface hydration and appearance. It does not restore facial volume and does not "fill" a wrinkle like an injectable gel. Injections are medical procedures that require a qualified professional.

Attributing a reaction to a single ingredient
