What are glycosaminoglycans in the skin?

GAGs are long carbohydrate molecules present on the cell surface and in the extracellular matrix. Their structure varies depending on the repeating sugars, their size, and their potential sulfation. Hyaluronic acid is a special case: it is not sulfated and is not attached to a protein core like most other GAGs.

In a biochemical analysis of human dermis, hyaluronic acid and dermatan sulfate were the major glycosaminoglycans, while chondroitin sulfate constituted a smaller fraction.[2] This observation describes the analyzed skin tissue; it does not mean that a hydrolyzed cosmetic mixture reproduces this composition.

GAGs can associate with proteins to form proteoglycans, which occupy specific compartments of the skin. They contribute to the mechanical and aqueous environment in which cells evolve, with functions that depend on their structure and location.

What does the INCI Hydrolyzed Glycosaminoglycans mean?

How do they contribute to hydration?

In living skin, glycosaminoglycans are part of a complex network with cells, matrix proteins, and water. In a cosmetic, hydrolyzed glycosaminoglycans are delivered to the surface in a much simpler vehicle. It is therefore necessary to separate the two levels of action.

  • In skin tissue: Endogenous GAGs contribute to the extracellular matrix, its organization, and its water management.
  • In the formula: The hydrolyzed ingredient participates in moisture retention and the sensory behavior of the product.
  • On the surface: It can support the suppleness of the stratum corneum in combination with other humectants.
  • In the routine: A cream can complement this aqueous phase with emollients and lipids.

A study on 32 samples of sun-protected human skin observed age-related variations for several GAGs and proteoglycans, including a decrease in hyaluronic acid and heparan sulfate markers in older groups.[3] This biological finding does not demonstrate that a cosmetic containing hydrolyzed GAGs reverses these changes.

Which skin types are they suitable for?

  • Dehydrated skin: A blend of several humectants can address water deficiency and feelings of tightness.
  • Combination or oily skin: An aqueous mist offers a light step, without alone predicting the risk of breakouts.
  • Dry skin: A cream containing emollients should generally complement the mist to provide more comfort.

How to use a glycosaminoglycans mist?

  3. Allow to penetrate or gently pat. It is not necessary to keep the skin constantly damp to benefit from the formula.
  4. Apply your serum then your cream. Humectants benefit from being integrated into a routine that also provides emollients when the skin needs them.
  5. Finish with sun protection in the morning. Glycosaminoglycans do not filter UV rays.

Promising deep penetration

The word "hydrolyzed" indicates fragmentation, but does not prove diffusion to the dermis. Fragment size, vehicle, and specific tests would be necessary.

Saying they rebuild the matrix

Surface humectation and conditioning are not equivalent to replacing endogenous GAGs or guaranteed collagen stimulation.

Deducing origin or vegan status
